Children are losing critical learning time, due to the effects of climate change on school infrastructure.
Imvelo Soweto Globe, supported by TrueTech, is a pioneering initiative dedicated to transforming climate resilience education through immersive virtual reality experiences.
We are a team committed to bridging the gap between abstract climate science and tangible understanding, particularly within the Soweto community. We leverage cutting-edge technology to create impactful educational tools that resonate with learners on a visceral level. Our approach is rooted in the belief that experiential learning is crucial for driving meaningful change and fostering a generation of environmentally conscious citizens.
School based urban farm project, transforming a small, underutilized lot into a thriving community garden. Focused on simple, accessible techniques like raised beds and composting, engaging local volunteers in planting and harvesting. This small-scale effort yielded a surprising amount of fresh produce, directly benefiting school nutrition and demonstrating the feasibility of localized food production.
The "Climate Coin" project empowers learners to contribute to climate protection and school improvement by recycling. Parents and learners donate materials, which are processed by a recycling company, earning learners "Climate Coins" redeemable for benefits like casual dress days, purchasing basic school needs. The proceeds from the recycled materials fund school enhancements and community projects, creating a tangible link between environmental action, individual and school rewards, and community development.
The Climate Resilient WASH Capacity Development Program empowers schools to enhance their water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services by tailoring solutions to their unique climate risks. Through targeted training and support, the program guides schools in developing personalized climate resilience WASH models, ensuring the availability and adequacy of essential services even in the face of environmental challenges.

This initiative seeks to empower the Soweto community to build climate resilience through targeted education and practical skills development. Residents will gain knowledge in crucial areas including innovative vertical farming, flood management, heatwave mitigation, effective waste management, and strategies for reducing CO2 emissions. This will enable them to proactively address the local impacts of climate change.
A key element involves a comprehensive educational program featuring a seven-module co-curriculum for schools, covering vital climate-related topics and culminating in climate action planning. Critically, local youth will be trained as facilitators to implement this curriculum within their schools, fostering peer-to-peer learning and community engagement. Complementing this, interactive multimedia resources will be developed for independent community learning, ensuring broad access to essential knowledge and empowering residents to take informed action towards a sustainable and resilient future for Soweto.
